LiveBinders
Description
LiveBinders offers users an online organization system in the form of a digital 3-ring binder that combines and structures resources such as web pages, files, images and videos. Content can easily be accessed, shared and updated from any location. LiveBinders allow for seamless collaboration, and can also be used ti display content as an e-portfolio. The free version of the tool allows users to have up to five binders, two levels of tabs and up to 100MB of storage.
In conjunction with other WBLTs, LiveBinders can be used as an integral part of the design, as an instructional support, or by the learners to organize, display and reflect on their learning. LiveBinders offers a versatile option for WBLTs, additionally offering an interactive interface for quizzes, presentations, live feeds and other supplemental teaching tools.

Justification for Using this Tool
Justification 1 - Collaborative Learning
Justification 1 - Collaborative Learning
- LiveBinders incorporates the concept of Collaborative Learning as individuals can access and share resources through the use of the tool. Integrating a collaborative aspect embraces the constructivist approach to learning, which considers interaction to be fundamental in the learning process (Faja, 2013). Additionally, learners can use their LiveBinder as an expression of themselves and their learning, thereby creating a personal e-portfolio that can grow over time, be reflected upon, and be shared with peers and colleagues.
- The organizational aspect of LiveBinders allows the Segmenting Principle to be incorporated into the online learning environment. According to Clark and Mayer (2011), learning should be self-paced, and presented in a manner that "chunks" similar material together into manageable sections. Segmenting can be accomplished with LiveBinders by using multiple binders and tabs to differentiate between concepts, which can be progressed through at a pace that is comfortable for the learner.
- LiveBinders allows for the integration of the Worked Example Principle, which asserts that demonstrations should be presented in a step-by-step format, guiding learners through a solution, in an effort to save working memory and reduce cognitive load (Clark & Mayer, 2011). LiveBinder's tab system creates the perfect foundation for the integration of step-by-step demonstrations that support the Worked Example Principle.
Strategies for Use
Strategy 1 – LiveBinders as a Central Component of the WBLT
Strategy 1 – LiveBinders as a Central Component of the WBLT
- LiveBinders can be set up and organized by the web-based learning tool creator as an integral part of the module design. This strategy is instructor-based, with learners navigating through the pre-established information and tasks.
Strategy 2 – LiveBinders with a Student-Centered Approach
- LiveBinders can be used by learners in a student-centered approach. This strategy enables learners to take control of their learning, creating and organizing their own digital binders.
