Formative is a web-based tool that allows instructors to assess student work instantly and to provide timely, descriptive feedback that helps students correct misconceptions or difficulties. Formative allows collaboration and communication in real time. It allows students to complete their work digitally and to receive formative feedback during the process. Formative aligns with the Social Development Theory (Vygotsky) and several Instructional Design Principles (Clark & Mayer, 2011).

- This tool can be connected to the Social Development Theory since it allows the student to learn from a more knowledgeable other through social interaction.
- When students are learning complex concepts, the Worked Example and Pre-training Principles can easily be built into the tool. A video demonstrating how to incorporate these principles while using Formative is posted in the ‘Strategies for Use’ section below.
- The tool is based on the Practice Principle since feedback is provided in real-time to the students while they practice online.
